Jamia Milia Islamia signed a memorandum of understanding with Union ministry of Home Affairs and Jammu & Kashmir government on Thursday for construction of a hostel for J&K students studying in the JMI university.
The proposed hostel facility will be for 400 students in postgraduation, graduation and school-level. It will be separate for boys and girls.
“The construction date will be decided soon. The project is expected to be completed within 24 months from the date of construction. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 16.22 crore which the government of Jammu and Kashmir will give to JMI in instalments to finance the construction of hostel building,” said a senior official of the varsity. He added that the amount given by J&K shall be reimbursed by the MHA. The land for the hostel will be provided by the JMI within its campus.
The MoU was signed by the Commissioner Secretary Higher Education, Tanveer Jahan, on behalf of the State Government and Registrar JMI, S M Sajjad and Union Joint Secretary, MHA, K Skandan in presence of Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Union Minister for Home Affairs P Chidambaram, Union Education Secretary and Vice Chancellor JMI.
Abdullah said this step will help in providing accommodation and bringing students from J&K into the mainstream. DH News Service
