Delhi Police have been asked to provide a report to Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung on measures taken for women’s safety in Delhi. Jung has also issued instructions to make girls’ schools safer.

This was after a meeting between Jung and senior police officers on Thursday in the backdrop of incidents of two minors being raped in the capital last week.Sources said Jung has also asked police to ensure that rape victims are treated and questioned in separate rooms of hospitals.

“The LG took stock of crimes reported during past few months and was apprised of the efforts made for detection of reported and sensational cases and apprehension of criminals,” said Senior Special Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Deepak Mishra.

Jung was informed that there has been a slight decrease in the number of heinous cases registered in the first ten months as compared to last year. Cases of rape, murder, riot, dacoity and causing hurt have decreased, while molestation, attempt to murder, robbery, kidnapping for ransom, snatching and burglary continue to cause concern.

According to data, 1,750 cases of rape have been reported till October 15. There were 3,487 molestation of women cases last year and there have been 4,406 similar cases reported to the police this year. “Street crime cases are properly monitored and whatever calls are received about them they should be converted into cases. This has been a priority. We are also pursuing that any person who has a complaint should not be turned away from the police station,” another police officer said.

Police made a special mention of ‘Operation Nirbheek’ which was recently launched to spread awareness among teenage girls about sexual offences. The north west district police also have a designated women police officer who coordinates with school authorities and interacts with girls. After the meeting, senior police officers have asked local police to ensure installation of post-box in schools for complaints or suggestions by students.

Jung lauded police efforts on the anti-corruption front. “The success of the anti-corruption helplines and particularly the follow-up legal and departmental action was appreciated,” Mishra added.
