The Calcutta University on Thursday conferred Doctorate of Literature (DLitt) degree on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for her contribution in the field of literature and social service.

The university's decision was challenged in the Calcutta High Court by two persons, a former professor of the University Ranjugopal Mukherjee and Abu Taleb, who in their petition had  argued that Calcutta University is a state-funded institution and hence, there will a loss of credibility if it confers a degree upon the highest executive authority of the state.

The degree was presented by West Bengal Governor and Chancellor of the University Keshari Nath Tripathi at a ceremony at the Nazrul Manch in the metropolis.
