Stung by the dismal performance of her party in Uttar Pradesh in the recent Lok Sabha polls and the reported desertion of the BSP by a section of Dalits, BSP supremo Mayawati has decided to discard the ‘social engineering' formula and signaled a return to the ‘Dalit-Backward agenda' in an apparent bid to revive the party in the state.
Mayawati, whose party failed to win even a single Lok Sabha seat in the elections, had recently removed the coordinators and several district chiefs of the state unit and appointed fresh faces. There isn’t a single Brahmin face in the new list of state coordinators, who are considered to be ‘very important’ in the party organization.
The new list of coordinators has a large number of Dalits and members of most Backward Communities. Similarly Dalits and Backwards have also found place in large numbers in the list of the newly-appointed district unit presidents of the party.
It was ‘social engineering' that had catapulted the BSP to power in the 2007 Assembly polls in the state. After the debacle in the 2012 Assembly elections, Mayawati had given the new slogan of ‘Sarvajan hitay, sarvajan sukhay' (in the interest and development of all).
