But rescue came in the form of the air force of the Caribbean country, which agreed to return Dominique Lanoise on board a military plane to the US, where she has lived for four years, local media reported on Tuesday.
Lanoise, a naturalised US citizen, told the press that she flew to Haiti, the Dominican Republic’s neighbour on the island of Hispaniola, in November on board a private plane. Since then, she has been sitting in a wheelchair after injuring her leg upon her arrival. The newspaper El Diario Libre reported that she travelled from Haiti to Santo Domingo on a bed loaded in the back of a truck.
Lanoise said she has seven children in Miami but no relatives in Haiti after they were killed in the January 12 earthquake there.
