Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday left for New Delhi after a surprise visit to Lahore where he met his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif and pledged to pursue the peace process.

Modi spent some 90 minutes at the ancestral residence of Sharif at Raiwind, about 40 km from here, after landing in Lahore on his way back from Kabul to Delhi.

Modi had earlier greeted Sharif on his birthday, attended the wedding celebrations of the Pakistani leader's granddaughter and also held talks on bilateral issues, the officials and media reports said.

"Infusing a positive spirit in the neighbourhood, Modi departs from Pakistan after a few hours in Lahore," Indian external affairs ministry spokesman Vikas Swarup tweeted.
