During such film fests, one can have an opportunity to view rare films, which are otherwise difficult to watch.

Film Festival coordinator Prof Raviraj Kini said that the NIFF is organised with an aim to build a humane and tolerant society.

Presiding over the inaugural session Nittee (Deemed to be University) vice chancellor Dr Satheesh Kumar Bhandary said that film is an integral part of society.

Unfortunately, the art films have taken a back seat nowadays. NIFF screens art films so that film enthusiasts can make use of the same. There is a message in art films for the society to carry, said the VC.

Student coordinator Dr Maitreya Deshpande was present.

The film festival will be held until April 19.
