Students of the Delhi University had a sleepless night on Wednesday as the university site displayed erroneous scores for the first and third semester revised results. The first semester examination results were declared in December-January and put up on the DU website.

According to the students, the marks were “arbitrarily” reduced by 5-15 per cent.  “In English (Hons) there was a reduction of around eight per cent marks. These reductions were not in the marksheet of few students, but across all colleges. Even in Hindi (Hons) there was a reduction of 12-13 per cent,” said Neeraj Singh, an English (Hons) student of Hindu College.

Subrodeep, an undergraduate student of Zakir Hussain College said that around 20 marks were reduced in Political Science.

“I saw the marks of at least 300 students that were all reduced. It was strange because when we were adding the internal assessment marks and the revised marks, the total was different from that put up on the website. This total was of the previous result,” he said.

Economics too

An Economics (Hons) student of Kamla Nehru College said there was a reduction of 13 per cent marks in Economics. “”Specific paper marks were changed. Out of three papers, marks were changedin two papers. Earlier, I had 88 per cent, which changed to 75.3 per cent,” she said.

Around 100 students from the Hindu College went to the vice-chancellor’s (VC) office on Thursday demanding an explanation. “The official accepted there was a mistake due to some software problem and will be rectified within a day,” said Atul, another undergraduate student.

Students who were earlier declared succesful panicked as the reduction of marks meant they had failed the semester. Besides, there were rumours that the DU website had been hacked.

“Teachers and students have been having a terrible time since last night. Whether it was hacked or there was a software glitch, we really don’t know. But it seems like an extension of the inflated marks in these semester results,” said Miranda House Physics professor Abha Dev Habib.

A corrigendum posted on DU’s website said: “There was some technical error in individual results of some students uploaded on this page. The same has been withdrawn.

Teachers seek clarification

The Delhi University teacher’s body, Democratic Teachers’ Front (DTF), on Thursday condemned the callous attitude of the university officials, reports DHNS.

“DTF is dismayed by the indifference of the university officials who offered no apology or explanation to students and concerned teachers while they removed the revised results from the website later on in the day, and dismissed the previous night’s action as a blunder. Even as confusion continues to reign in students’ minds, the university has not come forth with any official clarification,” said a member.

DTF feels that the university should immediately clarify the reasons for the blunder and the Vice-Chancellor must take personal responsibility for it and apologise to the students. and teachers of the University.
