The congested Patiala House court near India Gate will be soon shifted to a new and more spacious complex at Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg.
The proposal to construct a new court complex at a cost of Rs 306 crore was cleared by the Delhi cabinet headed by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.
The cabinet also approved a proposal to increase funds to purchase desktops and laptops for around 700 judicial and executive officers in the city.
Briefing the media after the meeting, Sheila Dikshit stated that the Patiala House, which is housing the New Delhi District Courts, has become too congested and its ambience had been eclipsed due to several unauthorised construction within the premises.
“It has been decided to shift the complex at DDU Marg (Rouse Avenue). The Ministry of Urban Development has got a 5-acre plot allotted on the road from the Land and Development Organisation,” Dikshit said.
The new court complex will have a built up area of 7.5 lakh square feet. The centrally air-conditioned building will be constructed following Green Building concept, officers said. The building will be eight-storeyed which will house 41 court rooms and have ample space for parking.
Officers said the complex will be designed in a manner that there will be separate path for the movement of judges, lawyers, litigants and the convicts. The complex will also boast of an auditorium with capacity of 200 persons.
“The complex will have solar panel for external lighting, covered roof with solar panels and proper traffic management. The government has taken care of security aspect and has decided to install an automatic security system in the complex,” an officer said.
Dikshit said in order to enhance the efficiency of the judicial and executive officers, the city government has enhanced the amount for purchase of desktops for their residence. This will benefit 427 judicial officers and 270 IAS and DANICS officers.
