Carpets and rugs are significant for home interiors as, they lend a luxurious look and are also essential for comfort. If the right kind of pieces are chosen, they can set the tone for overall home decor. When it comes to comfort, who wouldn’t like the soft, luxurious feel on the floor under their feet?

With so many different colours, patterns and textures available, it can be difficult to choose the best carpet for your home. So, let us explore some of the trends and options to choose the right carpets and rugs:

Texture
The texture or the feel of the rug and carpet is crucial. It has to be extremely soft. Hence, one finds that a vast majority of new collections in the market are dominated with soft fibres. As manufacturers point out, “The fibre may be synthetic or cotton or even wool; but we take care that very fine strands are used in making. This goes to ensure a very soft feel.”

Visual appeal
Texture constitutes both the feel and the look. In order to make sure your carpet stands strong despite the neutral colour, opt for a sturdy texture in the carpet, say the
experts. Visual texture constitutes great significance in designing the carpet. ‘Frieze’ or ‘cut and loop style’ is a huge trend in a more contemporary avatar. It provides depth and character to the carpet.

Earlier, pin dot or geometric square designs were very common, but now, the designs have evolved. There is a choice between traditional, floral and modern patterns. One can choose patterned rugs with solid upholstery, but if furnishings are in heavy patterns, then a rug with subtle designs or solid colours is a better option.

Colour code
There have been no major changes in the colour palette from last year. Neutral colours are still the preferred choice. Though, of late, there has been a more prominent increase in white and off-white carpets as they are considered classy and not-boring anymore.

Tone-on-tone, or two-tone colour is also a popular trend this year. It features carpet fibres of different colours twisted together, adding depth and more visual texture to the carpet. Angelique Dhama, chief marketing officer, Obeetee Rugs, says that colours of the rug should match your decor and the mood. A bold colour is a good option if the rug is the centrepiece of the room, whereas pastel colours are ideal for the rug to blend in with the overall theme.

“Generally speaking, dark and bright colour rugs are better suited for large rooms. Soft shades are good for smaller rooms as they tend to make the room look larger. Remember that a carpet has a big impact in a room; so, a bright coloured one can sometimes seem overpowering. And it is not easy to change carpets and rugs frequently, so, a safe option would be to go for a neutral palette. This can be complemented with brighter or bolder colours in other elements of the room like window dressing, wallpapers, wall paint, furnishings, accessories etc.” Current trends favour neutrals in earthy hues, including warm greys and the ever-popular beige.

Two better than one
It is not quite necessary to have a wall-to-wall carpet. In order to have a good visual impact, make sure that the edges of a living room rug is placed under (at least) the front legs of the furniture. In the case of dining rooms, the rug should be big enough so that all chairs are on the rug even when they are pulled out for use.

Bedrooms and other areas can have rugs of smaller sizes depending on the space you have and the decor needs.

It is better to place two small- or medium-sized rugs to create two distinct living spaces in a large room. However, when using more than one rug, it is recommended to choose rugs that complement each other in style and colours to enhance the overall look.
