Labourers in the city are likely to benefit more from the welfare schemes with the government set to simplifying the registration process for benefits of welfare scheme.

Labour Minister Gopal Rai held an interactive session with over 35 trade unions of
construction workers to understand the work conditions and difficulties faced by the construction workers in the Capital.

Expressing anguish over the meagre benefits extended by the Labour Department, Rai has now instructed the department to revise the entitlements of monetary benefits under the current welfare schemes of the Delhi Construction Board.

Currently, the Delhi Construction Board has 18 welfare schemes and cess funds to the tune of Rs 1,628 crores, which has not been adequately disbursed among the registered construction workers, the government said.

The Labour Minister said more registration camps will be organised for the construction workers. So far, 328 registration camps have been jointly organised by Board and Labour Department.

There is also an urgent need to have a proper cess collection mechanism in place to maintain transparency, said Rai. The due cess needs to be collected from various bodies including construction companies, he added.
