Sixteen awards for medical student

Convocations come and go, but in fewer the audience are forced to applause constantly for a single student.

Parul Gupta, who completed her MBBS on December 31 was given 16 awards during the convocation of Maulana Azad Medical College.

This is the maximum number of awards given to a single student in the 54-year-history of the college. She received the medals and certificates from the chief guest, Dr K K Talwar, chairman, board of governors, Medical Council of India. The awards consisted of excellence in academics and extra-curricular activities.

"As a doctor one has to have a broad and open mind. Thus, I participated in co-curricular activities in college which gave me different perspectives to look at things, including my profession," Parul told Deccan Herald.

Parul was a member of the students' union of MAMC, apart from being an active organiser of cultural events under Spic Macay and other workshops. She plans to pursue her post-graduation in the field of Medicine. And All India Institute of Medical Sciences is her first choice.

Presiding over the ceremony, Dr A K Agarwal, dean, MAMC said no other industry had a bigger responsibility than the medical sector. He urged the students to deliver the services responsibly. At the convocation, over 300 students were awarded degrees in Medicine and Dental courses.
