Strong quake hits mid-Atlantic Ocean

The quake struck 1,802 kilometers east-northeast of Saint John's, Antigua, at a depth of 10 kilometers at 0203 IST on Sunday (5:33 pm local time Saturday), according to a preliminary USGS report.

A National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration tsunami scientist, Bill Knight, said the quake was a "sub-threshold event" that did not merit a tsunami warning.
