The Best Surprise Ever

Ned lazily and stretched myself on the bed. Study, study, study! What a boring life…. It was exam time again! "Amulya! Come and eat dinner!" I heard my mother calling. I scooted downstairs and ate an everyday routine meal of chapattis and sabji.

Life was becoming very dull, and if I may say so- lifeless! I longed for something special to happen and my heart itched for sum fun and interesting things to do….. I closed my eyes, still wishing and soon drifted off into a delicious slumber…..
It was very late in the night when I heard the footsteps and awakened. I wondered who it could be at such a late hour. I went to the balcony and swung the doors open and I felt the cool night breeze chill my skin. I craned to look but my vision was blocked by the old peepul tree's foliage.

I returned thinking it had most probably been my imagination. I heard the footsteps again- this time they were coming towards my house! I held my breath. I felt the fear slowly creeping into my heart… It was a burglar, I thought. I was in great peril!
Beads of sweat gleamed on my face in the faint moonlight. All of a sudden, the door creaked…. My heart skipped a beat and immediately reached out for the switchboard. Instantly, light flooded the room!

I cried out in astonishment to see who the 'thief' was! "Rashmi!" I yelled in joy and relief as I ran to embrace my beloved aunt! We hugged each other tightly and I shed tears of utter bliss! I hadn't seen her for over two years since she left for Melbourne and her arrival was a very joyful reunion indeed. We were the closest aunt and niece ever! I loved her as much as I loved my own mother.

I looked aside and saw my cute little cousin brother who shared my birthday and hugged him too. "Oh Anirvin! How tall you have grown! Now you are a big boy, aren't you?" I exclaimed. He flashed me a million dollar smile.

The last time I had seen him was when he was a tiny baby and now he was already three!

In all this excitement my brother had awakened too and we all had a lovely time chatting and filling in each other with the latest news. My life was filled with delight for the next two months and I had many fun filled days with my aunt Rashmi and my little cousin brother. Aunt Rashmi's surprise visit is one I'll never forget and will always treasure!
