An 18-year-old girl was allegedly shot dead by her brother in Uttar Pradesh's Ambedkar Nagar district, after he caught her talking to her lover  over a  cell phone.

The brother, identified as Vikas Singh,  however, was arrested by pure chance. Vikas was a  suspect in another murder case, and during the investigation, he confessed to having killed his sister with the help of an accomplice.

According to police sources, Vikas, a resident of Jehangirganj area in the district, buried the body near his house.

The police recovered the body on Monday, the sources said, adding that the body  has been sent for postmortem.

Sources said the victim  had been  having an affair with a youth for the past few years. She had eloped with him two months  ago  and had returned home  just a  few days back.

She then told  family members that  the affair was over and that  there would be no relationship with the youth anymore.

On Saturday, Vikas caught her talking to  the boy  again. In a fit of rage, he fired at her with a country-made pistol, killing her on the spot.

He buried the body a few hundred metres away from his house.

A hunt has been launched to nab the  accomplice.
