Some of the beaches are of virgin in nature and are free from the hustle and bustle of the daily affairs. One can only hear the sound of the waves, feel the cool touch of the tropical breeze and rediscover yourself. One such beach is Kaup which is situated 20 km from Udupi on National Highway 66 (formerly NH 17).
The beach is covered by greenery on one side. The cool breeze that blows across the beach refreshes you from your tiredness.
This can be a perfect weekend spot as you can take a relaxing sunbath or stroll across the sands. One can also enjoy a camel ride in the evening at the beach. The beach is also known for its Light House. A view of the Light House built on a huge rock is really stunning. The beach with 100 ft high Light House on the rocks is a photographer’s paradise. The beach has a couple of huge rocks lining the shore. The Light House is the lonely building in the middle of the sea to direct the navigators and warn them against the treacherous shore lines.
The Light House tower was built in 1901 on a 12 metre high rock. The light source with 55 mm burner was commissioned in the same year. This entire equipment was provided by M/s Chance Bros Birmingham. Prior to independence, the region was part of the princely state of Mysore.
Visitors are allowed inside the Light House between 4 pm and 6 pm at a nominal fee per head. The timing varies every month depending on the sunset as the halogen light of the lighthouse is switched on only after the sunset. Once the light starts beaming out its rays, visitors are not allowed.
A magnificent view of the sunset from the Light House where the sea water turns emerald green and the horizon becomes a brew of red and orange is an ecstatic vision. This provides unlimited and uninterrupted panoramic sight.
