Enraged over maltreatment by his children for being unemployed, a middle-aged man shot dead his teenaged son with a licensed double barrel gun after a heated argument in outer Delhi’s Samaypur Badli in the early hours of Saturday.

Police said the incident came to light after a call was made to the police control room regarding firing inside a house in Rohini sector 18 around 1 am. When a police team reached the spot, Shubham Aggarwal, 19, was found dead in a pool of blood in a bed. Shubham was a first year student of BTech in Computer Science at HMR Institute of Technology and Management in Alipur.

“There was a gunshot injury on Shubham’s upper abdomen and a double barrel gun was found lying near the body,” said B S Jaiswal, deputy commissioner of police (outer). On preliminary enquiry, the police was told by Subhash, Shubham’s father, that the latter had committed suicide. Family members were interrogated, and victim's sister Poonam was examined in detail.

Poonam told the police that Subhash was alcoholic and did not do anything worthwhile to earn his livelihood. “Children of the family sustained themselves by earning. But Subhash used to pick up quarrels often at home on petty issues,” Jaiswal added.

Subhash was subjected to sustained interrogation and being unable to confront facts which emerged during interrogation of family members, he ultimately confessed to have killed his son.

He disclosed that he was not able to earn livelihood after suffering heavy losses in businesses. “As a result, his kids used to ill-treat him. He also claimed that his children used to taunt and beat him up,” Jaiswal said.

On Friday, Shubham saw him eating dinner around 10 pm and taunted him by asking his mother “Why was food served to him?” He then planned to eliminate Shubham with his double barrel gun.

“When Shubham was sleeping in his room, Subhash shut the door and shot him in his chest from a very close range. He ensured that Shubham died after which he rushed to other family members and shouted that Shubham had killed himself with a screw driver,” Jaiswal added. Subhash was arrested and his gun was seized. He claimed that the gun was licensed from Panipat, but police are probing to confirm it.

Victim's body was handed over to family after a post-mortem at Babu Jagjivan Ram Memorial Hospital. He is survived by his parents, sisters Poonam, Swati, Rama and Kusum. Subhash used to run ‘Aggarwal Sweet Shop’ in Patel Nagar block I, which was sealed by authorities in 1992. Thereafter, he settled in Rohini and tried his hand in property dealing but failed.
