The ‘Wake up Clean up Bengaluru’ expo came to a close on Sunday with several commitments and suggestions to tackle the mounting garbage crisis in the City.

BBMP Commissioner Siddaiah, Jayanagar MLA Vijaykumar, Bangalore City Connect President Ravichander and other civic experts spoke during a panel discussion about the problems related to waste management and the need to practise segregation of waste.

They also discussed bio-medical waste generated by big hospitals and the need to recycle such waste. “The target for such type of waste collection should be polyclinics, small clinics and households,” they said.

Kalpana Kar, solid waste management expert said she would be piloting a programme on collecting all bio-medical waste whose source would be households. “We will reduce the amount of garbage collected in Mandur and Mavallipura by resorting to bio-mining.

BBMP will actively participate to ensure that these landfills are managed properly,” assured Siddaiah. The panel suggested that waste segregation should be introduced at schools also.

The last day also witnessed prize distribution for schools that participated in the competitions on waste management.
