The image of a dark core encircled by a flame-orange halo of white-hot gas and plasma looks like any number of artists' renderings over the last 30 years.NSF's media advisory described the results of the project as "groundbreaking." NSF director France Córdova delivered the remarks at a press conference at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C.Other EHT team members too spoke at the presser.Project director Sheperd Doeleman, of Harvard University and the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics;Daniel Marrone of the University of Arizona;Avery Broderick of the University of Waterloo and the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics; Sera Markoff of the University of Amsterdam. The new results are based on EHT's first observing run, which took place over the course of one week in April 2017.
