A 50-year-old woman was killed and her husband sustained serious injuries when their moped was hit by a speeding bus in south-east Delhi’s Sunlight Colony. The incident occurred when they were on way to Kalka Mandir, police said on Friday.

Victim Poonam Rastogi was a resident of east Delhi’s Ganesh Nagar. Police said her husband Virender is undergoing treatment at the AIIMS trauma centre. She was a homemaker, while Virender is a tailor.

In his statement, Virender told police that they had been attending Vasantik Navratra Pooja at Kalka Mandir in Nehru Place. They had left home around 10.15 pm on Thursday. Virender was driving the moped, while Poonam was riding pillion.

“They were travelling towards Nehru Place when their moped was hit by the bus near Sarai Kale Khan ISBT,” said a police officer.

The moped was hit from behind which made Virender lose balance and hit a road divider. They were rushed to a hospital in a police control room van, but Poonam was declared brought dead with head injuries.

A case of rash driving and causing death by negligence has been registered with Sunlight Colony police station.

The driver fled from the spot, but the vehicle’s registration number was noted by other motorists. Police said the driver has been identified, and raids are being conducted to nab him.
