A 22-year-old youth has been arrested for allegedly creating a fake Facebook profile of his neighbour and posting obscene contents on it, police said on Wednesday.
A resident of Shalimar Bagh in west Delhi, Rohit Bansal was held after the victim approached police in January claiming that she was getting obscene calls and messages from a particular number.
The accused works with his father who is a businessman.“Rohit and the complainant are neighbours, and Rohit committed the crime with an intention of humiliating the woman over personal enmity,” a police officer said.
It has come to light that the families of the victim and the accused are involved in a dispute over construction in the area.
In her complaint, the victim alleged that she started receiving text messages from an unknown number in July last year. Within a few days, she started receiving missed calls from the same number.
“On August 13, a friend told me about an obscene profile that had been created in my name on Facebook. The profile had obscene pictures and content,” the woman stated. At first, she took the missed calls and vulgar messages as a prank by someone.
However, on getting to know about the fake profile on the social networking site, she decided to approach police.
Police investigated and found that computers at Rohit’s house and his father’s office were used for the crime.
“Rohit had posted obscene contents on the profiles of the victim’s family and friends using this profile,” the officer added.
A case under Information Technology Act has been lodged against Rohit with crime branch police station’s cyber cell. Police also suspects that he has also created fake profiles of several women in his neighbourhood.
