21 GW solar, wind energy projects to be auctioned by March 2018

After the success of reverse bidding of renewables, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy on Friday announced the auction of up to 21 GW solar and wind capacities by March 2018.

The government will put 3-4 GW wind power capacities on the block for bidding in two rounds by March 2018. Each round will be of 1.5-2 GW each, Minister for Power and New and Renewable Energy R K Singh told reporters here.

The Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) will be the nodal agency for the auction.

The government has already auctioned 2 GW of wind capacities this year. It has also decided to auction 10 GW of wind capacities each in 2018-19 and 2019-20.

At present, wind power installed capacity is 32 GW in the country, and the government is targeting 60 MW by 2022. Wind power tariff had dropped sharply to an all-time low of Rs 2.64 per unit during the second auction by the SECI for 1 GW projects in October this year.
