As many as 5 popular Indian car models — Maruti Suzuki Celerio, Maruti Suzuki Eeco, Mahindra Scorpio, Hyundai Eon and Renault Kwid — failed a crash test carried out by Global NCAP, a UK-based safety and testing organisation.
The latest results on the crash test on Indian cars released by Global NCAP (New Car Assessment Program) have rated all 5 models tested by it as zero star. As per the test results, all of them showed low levels of adult occupant protection.
Commenting on the latest crash test results, Global NCAP Secretary General David Ward said, the latest results show how important it is for cars to have a body shell that can remain stable in a crash.
“This is an absolutely crucial pre-requisite for occupant safety together with fitment at least of front air bags,” he added.
Renault’s fast selling small car Kwid was tested in 3 versions, including one with airbags, but each was rated as zero star for adult safety, Global NCAP said, adding, as a result of the crash testing the company has sought to improve the safety performance of the Kwid.
Car makers must ensure that their new models pass the UN’s minimum crash test regulations, and support the use of airbag, he added.
The tests saw the base models, all without airbags, driven at 64kmph into a block simulating a head-on collision. NCAP also tested the cars in a crash simulation according to United Nations standards — a frontal collision at the slightly slower speed of 56kmph and none of them was able to score even a single star out of 5 for Adult Occupant safety. However, Auto industry body Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) Director General Vishnu Mathur questioned the findings saying the Global NCAP crash tests were conducted at a speed of 64kmph while even in Europe and the US, which has the most advanced safety standards frontal offset is tested at 56 kmph and India is also adopting the same standards from 2017.
Reacting to the findings, Maruti Suzuki insisted that all its products were safe. Renault and Mahindra & Mahindra also said their entire range is manufactured to meet or exceed safety standards.
