Bengaluru: iPhone maker Apple has named researcher Amar Subramanya as its vice-president of AI. He will be replacing John Giannandrea, the company’s senior VP for machine learning and AI strategy.

Subramanya is a graduate from Bangalore University. According to his LinkedIn profile, he completed his Bachelor of Engineering (BE) Electrical, Electronics and Communications Engineering from the university in 2001, and joined IBM as a software engineer. He previously worked in Microsoft and joined Google as Staff Research Scientist in June 2009. He also briefly led AI efforts at Microsoft.

Apple in a statement said Subramanya will lead critical areas, including Apple foundation models, ML research and AI safety & evaluation.

His appointment comes at a time when tech giants are enhancing their AI services. Subramanya will report to software chief Craig Federighi.

In a statement, Apple CEO Tim Cook said, “AI has long been central to Apple’s strategy, and we are pleased to welcome Amar to Craig’s leadership team and to bring his extraordinary expertise to Apple. These leadership moves will help us continue to push the boundaries of what is possible through AI.”
