Bengaluru: BEML Limited, a Defence Public Sector Undertaking under the Ministry of Defence, has won an order valued at Rs 1,888 crore from the Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai, for the supply of LHB (Linke-Hofmann-Busch) passenger coaches.
The order, comprising a mix of day and sleeper variants, is part of Indian Railways’ strategic initiative to replace legacy loco-hauled coaches with modern, safer, and more efficient LHB coaches. The project is scheduled to be completed within 15 months, BEML said in a statement.
LHB coaches represent the new generation of passenger rolling stock, designed with lightweight stainless-steel bodies, anti-telescopic construction, and advanced suspension systems to ensure greater safety, superior comfort, and operational efficiency. Fully compatible with End-On Generation (EOG) technology, these coaches provide smoother rides, lower maintenance costs, and longer service life, supporting Indian Railways’ commitment to delivering modern, safe, and passenger-friendly travel.
Speaking on the occasion, Shantanu Roy, Chairman & Managing Director, BEML Ltd., said, “This order underscores BEML’s strong partnership with Indian Railways and our commitment to delivering globally benchmarked passenger rolling stock. Our LHB coaches integrate cutting-edge safety, comfort, and efficiency features, making them a critical component in India’s rail modernisation journey.”
BEML’s LHB coaches will feature modular interiors with enhanced aesthetics and durability, bio-toilets equipped with pressurized flushing systems, and advanced decoupling rubber technology to reduce noise and vibration. They are equipped with CCTV surveillance systems for passenger safety, emergency alarm switches to halt the train in emergencies, mobile charging facilities, and a 10-hour battery backup for lights and fans in the event of a power failure. An independent emergency lighting system will automatically activate in case of accidents, ensuring continued passenger safety.
The company has also secured its maiden overseas contract in the Rail and Metro segment from Malaysia for the retrofit and reconditioning of the Mass Rapid Transport System, valued at $1 million.
