Retail giant Walmart has recalled 8,50,000 stainless steel water bottles, which have been sold in stores and online since 2017 across the US. The recall comes after safety concerns were raised about the bottles' lids, which can eject forcefully, posing a risk of serious injury.

The recall announcement alerted people to stop using the product (Ozark Trail 64 oz Stainless Steel Insulated Water Bottles), and asked them to return the product to claim a refund with the company.

Reason behind the recall

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall on July 10 after receiving reports of safety concerns.

It was learned that the lids of these water bottles can forcefully eject when consumers try to open them, causing injury to the face.

According to the CPSC, three reports were received from consumers who were injured by the lid striking them on the face. In two cases, victims suffered permanent vision loss after being hit in the eye.

The recall was issued as a safety precaution to prevent further incidents.

Safety hazard addressed

The main hazard with the water bottles is that the lids can eject with force, especially when opened after the bottles have been used to store carbonated drinks, or perishable beverages like juice or milk over time.

Walmart took note of the safety hazard, announced the recall, and offered customer a full refund for the concerning product.
