With a share of about 23 per cent, Delhi and National Capital Region (NCR) has generated maximum jobs across different sectors throughout India and in the metros during the last two consecutive quarters, according to a just concluded analysis by apex industry body Assocham.
According to Assocham’s sector specific analysis — ‘Job Trends Across Cities & Sectors,’ Delhi-NCR generated over 29,000 jobs in the first quarter of the current financial year while over 1.2 lakh jobs were generated across India during the aforesaid period. The study tracked the data on a daily basis for vacancies posted by about 3,500 companies via job portals like timesjobs.com, naukari.com and advertisements in the national/regional dailies and the news journals for 56 cities and 32 sectors offering job opportunities.
Mumbai followed by Bangalore, Pune and Chennai are top five Tier I centres that have generated maximum jobs with a share ranging between 8-14 per cent in total job generation across India. In Tier II category, Lucknow has topped the list with 1,698 jobs thereby registering a surge of over 54 per cent in job generation between the fourth quarter of financial year 2011 and first quarter of fiscal year 2012.
But the city’s share in the total job generation across India is a paltry 1.3 per cent, according to Assocham.
However, according to the study, there has been a dip of over 20 per cent in the total job generation between first quarter of the current financial year and the fourth quarter of the previous financial year across India reflecting a clear slowdown in employment. Besides, there has also been a dip ranging between14-33 per cent across eight metros — Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi-NCR, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai and Pune.
“This basically reinforces the picture that employers in India are turning very cautious in wake of the global economic slowdown which has also lead to a sharp decline in attrition levels at India Inc,” said Assocham Secretary General D S Rawat. IT and ITeS, education, banking, financial services and insurance and automobiles are top five sectors generating maximum jobs across India. IT-ITeS is the leading sector, creating over 11,000 jobs in Delhi-NCR.
