The CoE, according to IIIT-B proposal submitted to State government, will see faculty, students and people from institutions and industry engage in world-class R&D in areas of ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit) and FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) design, for developing applications in areas of biometric signal processing, image processing and recognition.
The plan is to develop two sets of labs under CoE for Embedded Systems. While C4I (Centre for Infotronics) will engage in applications of semiconductors in areas of computing, communication, command and control and information. The SEMICON Lab will address technology issues related to semiconductor design and analysis and manufacturing process.
Both C4I and SEMICON Lab will foster excellence nurturing talent and develop skilled manpower to meet industry requirements. C4I Lab will focus on embedded computing, wireless communication and control systems, SEMICON Lab will focus on VLSI/FPGA design, semiconductor manufacturing requirements in assembly, test, market and packaging.
While budget of Rs 12 crore has been earmarked for C4I Lab over three year period, it is Rs 10 crore for SEMICON Lab over the same period. A total of Rs 27 crore spend, including other infrastructures, is contemplated, the industry would chip in Rs 9.75 crore with State government contributing Rs 11.25 crore. The rest Rs 6 crore will be raised through fees.
CoE will also be involved in development of curriculum for education and training, besides creating virtual web labs for students and researchers from across the world for R&D purposes. IIIT-B sources said, these labs will help the country address its needs in electronics developing indigenous solutions. Furthermore, they said, with mobile technology expected to go 4G way in next few years, CoE and the two labs, could focus research on efficient use of handset applications, including security aspects, besides power consumptions by developing chips that save energy. Likewise, with intelligent buildings being norm for households and medical electronics developing in a big way, CoE labs, could produce R&D solutions addressing these key areas of country’s needs, they added.
