The government Monday night appealed to people to restrain from circulating “wrong” messages on social media about any distinction being made under GST law on the basis of religion.
“There are some messages going around in the social media stating that the temple trusts have to pay the GST while the churches and mosques are exempt,” an official statement said late in the evening.
“This is completely untrue because no distinction is made in the GST Law on any provision based on religion,” it said.
“We request to people not to start circulating such wrong messages on social media,” the statement said.
A tweet by senior BJP leader Subramanian Swamy was liked and re-tweeted by many.
“GST will tax temple activities but not of mosques & churches. It also exempts liquor/hard drinks. If not true please inform,” Swamy had tweeted recently.
