The benchmark BSE index Sensex gained over 48 points in early trade today on fresh buying by funds and retail investors amid a firming Asian trend.

The 30-share barometer rose by 48.46 points, or 0.22 per cent, to 21,188.94 with oil and gas, FMCG, power, realty and healthcare sector stocks leading the rise. The index had lost 30.20 points in yesterday's trade.

The National Stock Exchange index Nifty moved up by 6.00 points, or 0.10 per cent, to 6,307.65.Brokers said emergence of selective buying by funds as well as retail investors on positive cues from other Asian bourses influenced the trading sentiments here.

Among other Asian markets, Hong Kong's Hang Seng rose by 0.63 per cent. The stock market in Japan is closed today.
