Starter motors in Nano to be replaced

Tata Motors has asked an estimated 1.40 lakh Nano owners to bring back their cars for change of the starter motor free-of-cost.

However, the company maintains that the replacement exercise was not a ‘recall’ and they have not received any complaint from their customers on Nano’s starter motor.  “We have devised a better starter motor and so we are upgrading it in our old Nanos for improved performance. We have not received any complaint for this and this is not a recall,” a Tata Motors spokesperson said.

The exercise, that started in October 2011, will cost Tata Motors around Rs 110 crore. Further, the spokesman clarified that the company will change the part in all the old Nanos sold before launching the new Nano in 2012. As per the industry body SIAM’s data, Tata Motors has sold a total of 1,40,428 Nano units till November, 2011, from the car’s launch in 2009.
