Hit by global recession STMicro’s global revenue took a 15 per cent dip from around $10 billion in 2008 to $8.51 billion in 2009, but its Indian operations witnessed a 20 per cent growth to reach a turnover of $300 million in 2009.
This was revealed by STMicroelectronics President — Greater China & South Asia Region, Francois Guibert who was in City to attend the ISAVision Summit 2010. In India, STMicro employs 2,200 people, including 530 employees in its Bangalore-based joint venture ST-Ericsson, and operates from Noida and Bangalore. STMicro is one of the few microelectronics companies to recognise India’s potential and by 1990 had begun its design operations in the country. Today its R&D centre in India is the largest outside Europe where STMicro is headquartered.
Talking to Deccen Herald Guibert said “India plays a key role in the company’s technology R&D activities. Engineers here have made a substantial contribution to the development of cutting-edge low powered 45-nm design platform.” Globally STMicro has a huge portfolio of semiconductors, broadly categorised under communication ( 40 per cent of the revenue), consumer electronics (11 per cent), computer peripherals (13 per cent), automotive (12 per cent), industrial (8 per cent) and distribution (16 per cent).
The Indian operation, which has already applied for 300 patents and was granted 150 so far, specialises in R&D and design activities in the areas of set-top box, integrated TV, power train, car navigation chips, VLSI library platforms in leading edge 32nm, 45 nm, 65nm etc.
