Dear Sir,
I am in my final year of BSc Microbiology. I am very interested in doing MBA after my UG. I have decided to join MBA coaching classes after my degree so that I can concentrate primarily on CAT and other management exams. I desperately want to get into any one of the IIMs in India. My degree exams will be over by May. So I just wanted to know whether the time is sufficient enough to prepare for CAT-2013 since the exams would be commencing by November; moreover, I am a science student. I also want to know of other reputed institutions in India, especially in Karnataka, which offer MBA courses. Please guide me as I am a bit tensed about my future.
Y S Pradeep Acharya

Dear Pradeep
It is good to aim high and aspire for the best. Do give your best shot to prepare for CAT from May to November, which should be sufficient to get yourself familiarized with the methodology of the exam. At the same time, continue to give the other entrance exams whose list and websites are given below. This will ensure that you will be able to get into at least one reputed institute for your MBA in case you are not selected by IIM. ATMA (www.atma-aims.org), ENAT for Manipal (www.enat.org.in, www.epsfi.org), NMAT of Narsee Monjee Inst of MS (www.pearsonvueindia.com/nmat), PG-CET for MBA in Karnataka (www.vtu.ac.in, http://pgcet.vtu.ac.in), SNAP for Symbiosis PG courses (ww.siu.edu.in, www.snaptest.org), CMAT Common Mgmt Admission Test (www.aicte-cmat.in), K-MAT (Karnataka pvt colleges www.kmatindia.com), MAT (four times a year www.aima-ind.org/matmay11), XAT (for XLRI Jamshedpur www.xlri.edu/xat,  www.xlri.ac.in)

Dear Sir,
I am a 3rd Sem  B.E(CS) student studying in a reputed institute. I would like to do MTech from IIT or IISC. Also, I am planning to write GATE  exam. Could you please suggest ways to prepare for this? Also, suggest a good institute for postal coaching.
A student

Dear Student,
GATE is Graduate Aptitude Test for Engineering, which gets you admission in many reputed institutions for a Masters in engineering and related fields.  You can start preparing by getting the guide books available in most cities, going through the mock exams, and sharpening your general knowledge and communication skills. If you are keen, consider taking up a regular face-to-face coaching, where they will help you practice giving the exam, in your final year.  Please bear in mind that postal coaching will have limited value.

Dear Sir,
I am currently pursuing 11th standard in the science stream with PCMC combination. I’m very much interested in pursuing aeronautical engineering. However, I’m confused whether I have to take up aerospace engineering or aeronautical engineering. Please let me know which is the better option and also let me know which are the top institues providing this course in South India, preferably in Banglore.
Anusha

Dear Anusha,
Aerospace engineering includes the topics of aeronautics and goes deep into rocket and space technology. Hence it is more specialized and focused on outer space. If you are looking for employment in airlines and aircraft manufacturers, then aeronautical engineering will be more suitable. While IITs and NITs continue to be the most reputed in this field, there are now at least 3 engineering colleges in Bangalore offering these courses: Jain University, MV Jayaram, and SCTIT. These three have started the course recently. Keep in mind that you can also enter the aero industry with a degree in basic engineering and a specialization at the Masters level.

Dear Sir,
I am presently studying first year engineering at a very prestigious college in Bangalore. I will write the JEE exam this year and I’m confident of clearing it with a great rank. I am very much interested in the BS course that IISc is offering. Is it worth leaving my college to join the course wasting a year? How respected is this course? Is there future scope for good employment like engineering? And what are the research possiblities?
VT

Dear VT,
Four Year BS (Bachelor of Science) course recently started by IISc is a path breaker in the field of Pure Sciences, where you are made to study all science subjects for two years, and then specialize in one in the next two years. Although still in formative stages, this course is definitely going to acquire a good reputation in the years to come, and you will have excellent research possibilities. Employment in the corporate sector however, will be more paying if you have an engineering degree. Hence you should take your decision based on whether your interest is in research or in corporate career.

Dear Sir,
I have done a 3 years diploma in Electronics and Communication, after 10+2. I have a total 15 years of education. Apart from that, I have a few IT-related certifications like VMware Certified, ITIL Certified, MCSE Certified. Also, I have 10 years of IT experience. Presently, I’m working with an IT company, and my concern is that I do not have a degree. It is hampering my promotion which has been long due. I came to know that AICTE has announced BTech in distance mode. Is it true? Can I enrol for the same? Also I have membership with AMIE IEI and wrote exam last December 2012. Could you please guide me? I am confused whether to opt for AICTE distance mode or continue AMIE.
Ajay Kumar

Dear Ajay
Right now it may be advisable for you to continue with your AMIE in the Institution of Engineers India. The permission for B.Tech in distance mode has just come in and it may take some time before colleges structure out their programs and settle down with them.  With your background and experience, you will be able to complete your AMIE without too much difficulty, and it is universally recognized as equivalent to a degree in engineering. All the best.
