In a big relief, BJP candidate Ashwini L. Jagtap has won the bypoll to the Chinchwad Assembly seat on the outskirts of Pune, the results of which were announced here on Thursday.

She trounced her nearest Nationalist Congress Party-Maha Vikas Aghadi rival Vithal 'Nana' Kate and Shiv Sena (UBT) rebel Rahul Kalate who contested as an Independent.

Erode East bypoll performance an endorsement of Dravidian model governance, says Stalin

As the ruling DMK-backed Congress nominee took a virtually unassailable lead in the Erode East bypoll, the party president and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Thursday said the good show was a public endorsement of the "Dravidian model of governance" of his 22-month old government.

Counting of votes polled on February 27 was on in Erode East constituency and Congress' EVKS Elangovan was comfortably leading against his nearest rival, KS Thennarasu of the AIADMK. At the end of eight rounds of counting, Elangovan secured 61,125 votes and was leading by over 38,000 votes. With the "historic and grand win", the ground was being prepared for an even bigger victory of the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA) in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, Stalin told reporters here amidst emerging trends indicating at Elangovan's victory.

Immoral alliance between Cong-CPI(M) and BJP in Sagardighi, claims Mamata after TMC's bypoll loss

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday described the victory of the Congress at Sagardighi by-elections as "immoral", alleging that the grand old party, besides the CPI(M), had entered into an understanding with the BJP to defeat the Trinamool Congress.

Addressing a press meet, Banerjee said that her party will go it alone in the 2024 elections, "with the support of common people".

"For the Sagardighi loss, I do not blame anyone. Sometimes, in a democracy, developments may usually be positive or negative. But, there is an immoral alliance, which we strongly condemn. The BJP transferred its votes to the Congress," Banerjee told reporters here.

Counting for byeelections for Lumla assembly seat of Arunachal Pradesh, Ramgarh (Jharkhand), Erode East (Tamil Nadu), Sagardighi (West Bengal) & Kasba Peth, Chinchwad assembly seats of Maharashtra also begins.

Sagardighi Bypolls: The bypoll was necessitated following the sudden demise of Trinamool MLA Subrata Saha on December 29 last year.

He was a three-time Trinamool legislator from Sagardighi, securing victories in 2011, 2016 and 2021.

Erode Bypolls: The main opposition AIADMK strained every nerve to take on the ruling party over a string of issues including rise in electricity tariff and DMK regime not getting exemption for the State from NEET to make its electoral mark.

The campaign was led by Edappadi K Palaniswami and challenger O Panneerselvam's camp, which withdrew its candidate disappeared from the poll scene. For the AIADMK, the Supreme Court's directive allowing Palaniswami to continue to lead the party proved to be the much needed shot in the arm for the party.

Erode Bypolls: A test for Stalin

The Erode bypoll, termed by DMK President and Chief Minister M K Stalin as 'Edai podum therthal,' a byelection to weigh all the good work completed within 22 months after he took over the reins of power, is expected to be a test of the government's popularity and set the mood for the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

All arrangements are in place to count votes on March 2 for the bypoll held to Erode East Assembly constituency

The vote counting exercise is set to begin at 8 AM and expected to be completed before 5 PM.

In Chinchwad, an industrial town near Pune, the fight is between Ashwini Jagtap of the BJP, Nana Kate of the NCP and independent Rahul Kalate.
