New Delhi: Cleanliness is one of the key issues in the Delhi assembly polls. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) rebel leader and Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal on Thursday dumped three mini-truckloads of garbage outside the residence of former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to 'highlight' problems.

She was subsequently detained and released after registering the FIR for violating prohibitory orders.

Earlier in the day, Maliwal visited Vikaspuri and collected the garbage in three mini trucks and headed to Kejriwal's residence on Ferozeshah Road.

Accompanied by hundreds of women holding placards that read, "Muskuraiye, AAP Delhi Mein Hain," ( Smile, AAP is in Delhi), Maliwal dumped the garbage outside Kejriwal's house, using a shovel to throw waste onto the ground.

"For the past ten years, Arvind Kejriwal has ensured that Delhi becomes a giant garbage dump. Roads are broken, drains are overflowing, and waste is piling up everywhere," she told reporters.

Maliwal has had a strained relationship with AAP and Kejriwal since last year when she alleged that his personal secretary misbehaved with her at Kejriwal's residence. The matter is currently being heard in the court.

With the assembly polls scheduled on February 5, the parties are raising issues, including huge garbage dumps and cleaning of Yamuna. All the three parties, the BJP, the AAP and the Congress have promised to make the national capital a world class city if they came to power.

Delhi produces 11,332 tonnes of solid waste daily, while it processes around 65 percent of it remaining ends up in landfills. The city has a massive municipal solid waste management problem with the massive landfills at Ghazipur, Okhla and Bhalswa at the centre of the issue.

Clearing at least 28 million tonnes of legacy waste dumped at these landfills has been challenging as dumping of fresh waste continues at these sites.

Delhi Assembly Election 2025 | The first of two state assembly polls this year sees a three-way contest between AAP, Congress, and BJP in the nation's capital. AAP decided to contest the polls alone, causing rumours of a rift in I.N.D.I.A. BJP, meanwhile, is hoping the liquor excise policy scam and pollution in Delhi will give the saffron party an edge over AAP. Kejriwal, on the other hand, has different plans with his demand for reservations for Delhi Jats. Congress will also be looking to make its presence felt and has not held back from attacking its own alliance partner.
