Independents’ clout in Lok Sabha has been decreasing over the years.

In the first Lok Sabha, there were 37 independents, which rose to 42 in the 1957 elections, the highest in Lok Sabha’s history so far.

At present, the Lok Sabha has just three independents, among whom two are backed by the CPM.

In 2009 elections, nine independents had won while there were five in 2004.
