The trailer of an upcoming Kannada film, ‘Green Girl’, has become a talking point among movie buffs for its bold representation of religious conflict. Directed by Sarthak Hegde, the film explores interfaith love in Mangaluru from a surrealist perspective, “almost like a fairy tale”, Sarthak tells Showtime.
It follows a young teenage interfaith couple, one of whom is innocently entangled with a fundamentalist group. “The film is about how the society and these groups play a role in their relationship,” he adds. The couple is played by Mayur Gowda and Sucharita.
Sarthak grew up in Mangaluru, where social and political tensions were high. During his teenage years, he saw couples being harassed by moral policing groups. “So we always had this anger and wanted to channelise that into a film,” he says.
He adds: “The film however doesn’t villainise any of these groups. We wanted to remove the facade and understand where they’re coming from as well.” Sarthak and his team are looking for a distributor to get their 50-minute film on a streaming platform.
