Actor Jason Momoa has been tapped to play Lobo -- the spacefaring biker -- in Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow. The story will focus on Kara Zor-El, who is the cousin of Superman.

The actor shared his excitement on Instagram, sharing a snippet of his own statement where he had said "I always wanted to play Lobo, because I’m like, ‘Hello? It’s the perfect role'."

Momoa went on to express his enthusiasm at joining any such project, should DC come knocking. He then captioned the image with "they called."

Lobo, in the DC comics, is an antihero from the planet Czarnia, characterised by superhuman strength, regenerative abilities, invulnerability, and an irreverent attitude to boot, which makes him a formidable but thoroughly entertaining character. Created by Roger Slifer and artist Keith Giffen, Lobo first appeared in the comic Omega Men in June 1983. The character has often been shown as a bounty hunter with an appetite for destruction.

Jason Momoa, who played Aquaman -- a member of the Justice League -- in the DC universe, is giving up a clear hero's mantle to portray a murkier character. His role as the eccentric villain in Fast X should give viewers an idea of what one might expect from the 45-year-old actor.

Momoa's joining as Lobo was one of Hollywood's worse kept secrets, and he'd been linked to the role long before James Gunn came on board. Gunn, known for his Guardians of the Galaxy movies, is now producing the Supergirl project.

He welcomed Momoa to the fold with an Instagram story.

Gunn also shared a new artwork of Lobo showing him with an American flag in an apparent nod to Momoa joining the project.

Details about Supergirl are scarce, but Milly Alcock of House of the Dragon fame will play the titular role. Matthias Schoenaerts and Eve Ridley are part of the project too. It is based on Tom King’s 2022 comic book series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.

Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow will be the second film in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s rebooted DC Universe following the highly anticipated Superman, starring David Corenswet as the Man of Steel and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane.
