Malayalam poet Vishnunarayanan Namboothiri dies aged 81He was known for modernity in his Malayalam poems

Padma Shri recipient Malayalam poet Vishnunarayanan Namboothiri died in Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday at the age of 81. He was reported to be suffering from age related illeness.

Namboothiri, who had a long career as an English literature teacher in various colleges in Kerala, was known for modernity in his Malayalam poems. He won many awards including Kendra Sahitya Akademi award in 1994 for 'Ujjayiniyile Rappakalukal' and 'Ezhuthachan' award, which is the higest literary honour of Kerala government.

A known orator, Namboothiri was honoured with the Padma Shri award in 2014. He was a native of Thiruvalla in Pathanamthitta district. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan condoled the death of Namboothiri.
