Tollywood megastar Chiranjeevi, an inspirational figure for many, was invited to be the chief guest at the Brahma Anandam pre-release event in Hyderabad. His remarks at the event have stirred a controversy and social media is buzzing with netizens debating over his ‘sexist’ remark.
Chiranjeevi is seen expressing his wish of having a grandson to continue the family legacy. His statement has not gone down well with people on social media.
For the uninitiated, Chiranjeevi is the father of actor Ram Charan, who is married to Upasana Kamineni and the couple have a daughter, born in 2023.
Chiranjeevi’s ‘sexist’ comment has drawn significant criticism from all quarters for revealing his preference for having a grandson.
Responding to a question at the event, Chiranjeevi was seen saying “When I'm at home, it doesn't feel like my granddaughters surround me; it feels like I'm a ladies' hostel warden, surrounded by ladies all around. I keep wishing and telling (Ram) Charan, at least this time, have a boy so that our legacy continues, but his daughter is the apple of his eye... I'm scared that he might again have a girl.”
While a few saw the comment as harmless banter, others expressed their disappointment and frustration over the actor's comments. Social media users also debated that such statements ignite the outdated gender stereotypes and place undue pressure on parents while some defended the actor's right to personal preferences.
As the conversation continues grow like wildfire, it remains to be seen how Chiranjeevi will react to this controversy. The actor has two daughters, Sreeja and Sushmita Konidela. Sreeja’s children are Navishka and Nivrati, while Sushmita’s daughters are named Samara and Samhitha.
On the professional front, Chiranjeevi will be next seen in Indian fantasy action film Vishwambhara slated to release on 9th of May 2025.
