Known to trudge the less travelled path given his propensity to deal with taboo subjects, director Sami has won accolades for his subtle deftness and flair in this film,  a rarity in Kollywood cinema. Of course, his approach may not be palatable and perfect, yet he extends the envelope to hammer home his homily.

Drawing inspiration from Ivan Turgenev’s short story First Love, Sami, who has stirred up controversies with Uyir and Mirugam, takes up the theme of illicit relationships dealing with a father-in-law and daughter-in-law entering into forbidden terrain.

Anbu, son of wounded BSF soldier Veeraswamy, weds classmate Sundari before leaving home for training at a teacher’s college. Back home, circumstances conspire in soldier father being attracted to his daughter-in-law and she becoming a willing accomplice. How things leads up to a tension-filled climax on high seas when Anbu learns the bitter truth forms the rest of Sindhu Samaveli.
