Veteran filmmaker Velu Prabhakaran, known for making path-breaking Tamil films, breathed his last on July 18. He was 68. According to the reports, the veteran director was undergoing treatment for a prolonged illness and was admitted to the hospital for the past 10 days.
In his career, the visionary filmmaker Velu Prabhakaran, fearlessly showcased lesser-talked-about topics and made a niche for himself. His brave storytelling and socially provocative movies redefined boundaries in Tamil Cinema.

Through his films, he broke several taboos and reshaped filmmaking with bold subjects, including atheism, caste and sexuality.
His works received mixed reactions, earning both acclaim and controversy throughout his illustrious career. Some of his best works are Nalaya Manithan, Kadavul, Puratchikkaaran and Kadhal Kadhai.
During the 1980s he was one of the creative forces in the industry, inspiring generations of filmmakers and cinephiles.

Last respects
His mortal remains will be kept for public homage at White House, 21st Street, Sri Krishna Nagar, Valasaravakkam in Chennai, from Saturday evening to Sunday afternoon.
Well-wishers, industry insiders and members of the film fraternity are expected to visit and pay him their last respects.
Velu Prabhakaran’s cremation will take place at Porur crematorium on Sunday evening, in the presence of close family members and friends.
The filmmaker is survived by his loved ones. He will be remembered not only for his unmatched skill but also for his unwavering spirit in challenging cinematic norms.
