Indian Music Experience (IME) museum will present ‘Dhrupad Dhvani’, a two-day showcase of ancient Indian classical music, on Friday and Saturday.
The evening will feature two concerts by esteemed exponents — Padma Shri Pandit Ritwik Sanyal will be accompanied by his son Ribhu Sanyal (on vocals) on November 29, and Pelva Naik will perform on November 30. Both the artistes will be accompanied by Abhijit Sarkar (on pakhawaj).
Considered one of the oldest forms of vocal music in India, Dhrupad dates back to the 16th century and has changed over time yet stayed relevant, says Preema John, director of IME. “It is a spiritual and devotional form of music, which is meditative and contemplative,” she says.
This concert is also a part of IME’s efforts to promote and conserve music, shares Preema. “Dhrupad music saw a decline in the 18th century and has seen a resurgence in recent times but it is not as popular as other forms like ‘khayal’,” she elaborates.
She explains that Pelva’s concert will be in a ‘baithak’ (limited floor-seating) style, while Pandit Ritwik’s concert will be in an auditorium.
