Independent musician, Kavya Trehan, has always wanted to “create something that feels both futuristic and deeply rooted in storytelling”.

This summer, she is on a country-wide tour promoting her soon-to-be released EP, ‘Hyperreal’, with a series of theatrical concerts that offer a multisensory experience.

‘Hyperreal’ is a four-track set, exploring the different sonic tonalities that blend organic and inorganic sounds.

“There are sounds of birds chirping, voice notes of my grandmother, and simulated sounds where a guitar is engineered to sound different,” she says.

This EP is a new chapter in her musical journey. She says, “In ‘Hyperreal’, I debut as a co-producer.”

Kavya, who started making music at age 14, is known for her diverse genres. It ranges from electronic, R&B, and pop to cinematic, folklore, and experimental sound.

‘Hyperreal’ further explores the themes of archaeological discoveries and sounds that evoke a sense of space and time. Being a multifaceted artiste, her music has been shaped by diverse influences like James Blake, FKA Twigs, and Lous and The Yakuza.

Kavya is on tour until May with 60-minute performances at major Indian cities, which include New Delhi, Mumbai, Goa, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru. “I’m picturing this as a musical theatrical production rather than just pub-gigging,” she shares.

She will be joined by a team of artistes — Goya aka Abhishek Sekhri on Ableton Live (digital audio workstation), Dhir Mody on the drums, and Moebius, aka Nikunj Patel, on the visuals.

She describes her theatrical concert as a “designed auditory world that invites the audience to dive deep into a world of hyperreality and introspective storytelling”. “I want ‘Hyperreal’ to sound retro futuristic and look as if a black and white photograph had just been repainted,” she remarks.

Apart from making music, she is also an actor and a jewellery designer. Her Netflix rom-com, ‘The Royals’, is expected to be out soon.

However, music is her main focus. “I want the audience to feel all sorts of emotions. It can be the feeling of empowerment, being childlike, or even energised,” she says, signing off.
