Dance to political tunes
Music can transform any controversial topic into a delightful passion. With the album MIA, Maya Arulpragasam does just that. The lyrics of some of the songs on the album might be politically volatile, in a otherwise complex era of world politics, but the musical overturns give a creative meaning to these difficult words. Maya is the latest buzz in the music world; she is the flavour of the season and with her album, she provides a unique blend of techno, reggae and hip-hop music. The tracks have been written by her and Christopher Merce, David Taylor, Sugu Arulpragasam, Steve Loveridge, John Hill, Cherry Bryon-Withers, Opal Josephs, Sheldon Pennicot and Sekou Davis, Michael Mulders and Henri Overduin, Charles Smith, Martin Rev, Derek E Miller, Weley Pentz. While some tracks have mundane sounds of daily life like car horns, telephone rings and keypad tones mixed beautifully into the musical melody, their lyrics depict the stereotypes that have been created about the Asian community, albeit, humorously.
