Twenty-two Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislators in Jharkhand on Wednesday resigned to mount pressure on the Centre to call for assembly elections in the state, which is now under President’s Rule.

The party parliamentary board had approved the MLAs’ decision to quit the House. The MLAs included a nominated member from the Anglo-Indian community. The strength of  the Assembly has now been reduced to 42, about half of its actual strength of 82. Seven legislators had lost their assembly memberships under the anti-defection law.
