At least three people were injured and rail traffic on several routes were badly effected on Tuesday after 10 coaches of the Pune-bound Jhelum Express, which started from Jammu, derailed near a bridge over the Sutlej in Punjab.

The accident took place in the early hours at Ladhuwal near Ludhiana. Dozens of trains were either cancelled or their routes were diverted.

Rescue operation was underway till filing of the story and normal railway services are likely to be restored by Tuesday night. While an inquiry has been ordered, the accident is said to have caused due to a technical snag. Negligence was also not ruled out.

Had the train travelled some more distance, the bogies would have been on the bridge over the river, which could have led to a major tragedy. ­
