Mild tremors were felt in parts of Chennai after an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.1 on the Richter scale was reported in the Bay of Bengal on Tuesday afternoon.

The earthquake took place at 12.35 pm and had a depth of 10 km, the National Centre for Seismology said on its website.

Many Chennaiites took to Twitter and Facebook to say they felt tremors in areas including Kodambakkam, Valasaravakkam, and Tiruvanmiyur among others.

There were no reports of damage to life or property.

According to the NCE, the quake was reported in the Bay of Bengal around 296 km south-southeast of Kakinada, 312 km south-southeast of Rajahmundry, 320 km east-northeast of Chennai, 339 km south-east of Guntur, and 386 km east-northeast of Tirupati. No tsunami warning was issued after the earthquake.
