Yamuna crosses danger mark in Delhi, L-G cautions people

Delhi Lt Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena appealed to the people of not to enter the river and also take precautions.

"Due to heavy rains in the catchment area of Yamuna, the water released from Hathni Kund is likely to reach Delhi this evening. The river may cross the danger mark. I appeal to Delhiites not to enter Yamuna and take precautions," he said.

He also said that the administration is taking necessary steps from the security point of view.

According to the flood control room, the water level at the Old Railway Bridge rose from 203.86 metres to 205.38 metres.

The first warning signal has been raised asfloodsin river Krishna crossed the four lakh cusecs mark at Prakasam Barrage in Vijayawada on Friday. In river Godavari at Sir Arthur Cotton Barrage in Dowaleswaram near Rajamahendravaram, thefloodflow remained steady at 14.76 lakh cusecs (cubic foot of water flow per second), going past the second danger level. According to the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority, thefloodlevel showed a marginal decrease at upstream Bhadrachalam in Telangana on Friday afternoon, with signs of a further decline over the next few hours.

MP: People in 18 villages shifted as soil starts slipping from under-construction dam on Karam river

Residents of 12 villages in Dhar district and six villages in Khargone district of Madhya Pradesh were shifted to safer places on Friday after authorities found that soil has started slipping from an under-construction dam on the Karam river, a senior official said here. It was a precautionary measure, said Additional Chief Secretary (ACS) Home Dr Rajesh Rajora. An alert had been sounded for downstream villages a day before when water seepage was reported from the dam. The dam's reservoir filled up with water for the first time this monsoon asrainbattered the region.

Yamuna water level crosses danger mark in Delhi

The water level of the Yamuna river breached the danger mark of 205.33 metres in Delhi following heavy rain in upper catchment areas, prompting authorities to chalk out a strategy to evacuate people from low-lying areas.

The Delhi flood control room said the water level reached 205.38 metres at 4 pm on Friday. It had issued a warning on Thursday night.

The water level at the Old Railway Bridge rose from 203.86 metres at Friday 8 am to 205.29 metres by 3 pm, according to the flood control room.

Orange alert of torrential rain in Odisha

There will be no respite forrain-battered Odisha as the Met office on Friday warned of another spell of heavy showers for the next two days due to the possible formation of a new low-pressure area.

The weather system is set to form over north Bay of Bengal during the next 24 hours under the influence of a cyclonic circulation, which lies over west Myanmar, the Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre said.

It is expected to become more marked during subsequent 24 hours and move northwestwards, according to a bulletin.

Heavyrainoccurred at some places in Sundargarh, Deogarh, Sambalpur and Kendrapara over a 24-period till 8.30 am on Friday, the Met said.

Tensa in Sundargarh and Barkot in Deogarh received 113 mm of precipitation, followed by 90 mm at Kuchinda in Sambalpur.

101 dams in Rajasthan filled to capacity

More than 100 dams in Rajasthan are filled to their capacity as the state received good rainfall this monsoon season.

From June 1 to July 30, the state received 351.4 mm rainfall as compared to 220.7 mm in the corresponding period last year.

According to water resources department data, the water storage in 716 dams of Rajasthan till August 11 was 7,675.64 million cubic metres. The figure was 7,113.92 million cubic metre in the corresponding period last year.

More than 60 per cent of the total capacity of the dams in the state has been achieved this season. (PTI)

People from 11 villages in MP's Dhar asked to vacate homes as seepage from under-construction dam rises

Authorities in Dhar district of Madhya Pradesh have directed people residing in 11 villages to immediately vacate their houses and move to safety after it was found that the seepage of water from an under-construction dam has increased. An alert had been sounded in these villages on Thursday after water seepage was reported from the under-construction dam on the Karam river that afternoon, officials said.

Mumbai gets light showers, IMD predicts moderate rainfall

Most parts of Mumbai received light rains with occasional spells of moderate to heavy showers on Friday morning, but there was no report of waterlogging in any low-lying areas of the city, officials said. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted moderate rainfall in the city and suburbs in the next 24 hours, they said. Public transport services, including suburban trains and Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) buses, are operating as per their usual schedule, the officials said.(PTI)

Five of family rescued in Pune after car gets stuck on flooded riverside road

Five members of a family were rescued in Pune city in the wee hours of Friday after their car got swept away and stuck in a flooded riverside road in Erandwane area, fire brigade officials said. The family hails from Palghar district of the state and was in Pune to meet relatives, they said. "The incident took place around 2 am on Friday near Garware bridge when the car, in which the family members were travelling, got swept away while it was using the road that runs along the Mutha river," a fire brigade official said.(PTI)

Indore man who fell into drain found dead; two still missing in Maharashtra, MP

The body of a 24-year-old man who was swept away in a swollen drain in Indore was found on Thursday and two others were missing in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra after rains, while the Met office warned of flash floods in Vidarbha, officials said.

Some rivers in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra were flooded after heavy showers and several people from Bhandara and Chandrapur districts were shifted to safer places, they said. The heavy rains also caused damage to crops and an assessment survey was on, an agriculture department official said.

In Indore city of MP, two persons were swept away in swollen drains following heavy rains on Wednesday and one of them, a 24-year-old man, was found dead on Thursday. However, rescuers have not yet traced a woman, identified as Durga Jaiswal (26), who was swept away in a swollen nullah in the Banganga area of Indore in a separate incident on Wednesday night.(PTI)

Yamuna water level likely to cross danger mark in Delhi tomorrow morning

The Yamuna is flowing precariously close to the warning level of 204.5 metres in Delhi after heavy rain in upper catchment areas and is likely to cross the danger level of 205.33 metres on Saturday morning, authorities said.

A flood alert is declared when the Yamuna crosses the warning level, and people living near the floodplains and in flood-prone areas are evacuated.

The administration and the irrigation and flood control department have deployed 34 boats and mobile pumps in anticipation of flooding in low-lying areas.(PTI)

Odisha braces for more rain as Met predicts formation of new low-pressure system

Odisha may bear the brunt of another possible low-pressure system over the weekend, the Met office said on Thursday, even as the state continues to grapple with the losses and difficulties causes by torrential rain over the past few days due to a depression.

Heavy rain has battered several districts due to an intensified weather system, which crossed the state on Tuesday and now lay weakened over Madhya Pradesh. It led to flooding of many villages and low-lying areas, disrupting road connectivity as some bridges over swollen rivers collapsed.

MeT dept forecasts heavy rainfall in Rajasthan

The meteorological department has forecast heavy rains in most parts of Rajasthan for the next five days.

It has issued a 'yellow alert' for heavy rain accompanied by thunder and lightning in several parts of Jodhpur, Bikaner, Jaipur, Bharatpur and Ajmer divisions.
