Body of man who fell into swollen drain found in Indore; woman missing

The body of a 24-year-old man who was swept away in a swollen drain in the rain-hit Indore city of Madhya Pradesh was found on Thursday, a police official said. A woman who was also swept away in an overflowing drain (nullah) in the city in a separate incident was yet to be traced, another official said.

The man, Zakir Khan (24), accidentally fell into a swollen drain in the Sirpur area on Wednesday afternoon when he was trying to stop other people from entering the water body and was swept away, Chandan Nagar police station in-charge Abhay Nema said.

Twenty-four hours later, the body of Khan was found about 150 metres away from the site of the incident, he said. However, rescuers have not yet traced the woman, identified as Durga Jaiswal (26), who was swept away in a swollen nullah in the Banganga area

MP rains: IMD issues orange and yellow alerts for parts of state

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday issued an orange alert warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall in Indore and three other divisions of Madhya Pradesh even as intermittent showers continued to lash large parts of the state. An orange alert asks authorities concerned to "be prepared" to respond to any emergency situation arising out of weather change.

The IMD warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall ranging from 64.5 mm to 204.4 mm at isolated places of Indore, Ujjain, Narmadapuram and Jabalpur divisions. The department also issued two yellow alerts.

Jammu city records 189.6 mm in 24 hours, highest in 26 years: MeT dept

Jammu city recorded 189.6 mm rain in 24 hours, the highest downpour in a day in almost 26 years, causing landslides and flashfloods, meteorological department officials said on Thursday.

There were flashfloodsin most of the rivers, including Tawi and Chenab, which inundated low-lying areas and damaged infrastructure.

Two landslides were reported -- in Panjirthi and Circular Road -- causing damage to road, a building and some vehicles, the officials said.

The flashfloodsdamaged small bridges in Kalika Colony, washed out a wall of Satsang Garh, a spiritual centre, and a vehicle in Buntalab, they said.

Hundreds of houses in several colonies in low-lying areas were inundated and traffic came to a halt due to water-logging, prompting the district administration to sound afloodalert, they said.

According to the MeT department, this is the highest 24-hour rainfall in August for Jammu city since 1996. The city had recorded 218.4 mm of rainfall on August 23, 1996.

Uttar Pradesh: Four drown, several missing after boat capsizes in Yamuna

At least four people drowned and several others went missing on Thursday when a boat capsized in the Yamuna in Banda district's Marka area, police said.

The incident took place when the boat was travelling from Marka to Jarauli Ghat in Fatehpur district, they said.

Superintendent of Police Abhinandan said the boat was carrying 30-35 people.

Help of divers is being taken to trace the missing, the SP said.

Additional SP Lakshmi Niwas Mishra said seven to eight people swimmed to safety and many are feared drowned.

Four bodies have been recovered so far, a senior official said.

Heavy rains trigger flash floods, landslides in Uttarakhand

Heavyrainsin Uttarakhand caused a surge in streams that damaged buildings and shops while landslides in the hills blocked national highways and a number of rural motor roads on Thursday.

A swirling stream in Khablisera village washed away eight shops in Uttarkashi district in the early hours on Thursday, the state emergency operation centre (SEOC) here said.

Overnight excessiverainscompletely damaged three houses at Agarchatti village near Gairsain in Chamoli district. Mud and slush also gushed into eight houses in Agarchatti, it said.

However, no casualties were reported from anywhere.

Badkot and Purola in Uttarkashi district received 88 mm and 84 mm ofrain, respectively while the district headquarters received 70 mm ofrain. Chamoli gauged 62 mm ofrain.

Two washed away in J&K flash flood

Two persons were washed away by flash floods triggered by heavyrainon Thursday in Jammu and Kashmir's Ramban district.

Officials said two persons identified as Shamina and her daughter Rozia were washed away by flash flood triggered by incessantrain.

It has beenrainingheavily in Jammu division during the last 24 hours due to which most rivers, seasonal streams and other water bodies have swollen.

3 people swept away after heavy rains in Maharashtra, MP; IMD predicts flash floods in Vidarbha

Three persons were swept away in swollen drains after heavyrainsin Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, while the India Meteorological Department predicted a risk of flash floods in the Vidarbha region, officials said on Thursday. Some rivers in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra were flooded after heavy showers and several people from Bhandara and Chandrapur were shifted to safer places, they said.

The heavyrainsalso caused damage to crops and an assessment survey was on, an agriculture department official said. In Indore city of MP, two persons were swept away in swollen drains following heavyrainsand efforts were on to trace them, police said.

Himachal Pradesh rain havoc: Two dead, shops and vehicles washed away, roads blocked

Heavy rains wreaked havoc in parts of Himachal Pradesh on Thursday with two women being buried alive under debris following a landslide in Kullu district, while shops and vehicles were washed away and highways blocked by flash floods in other places.

In Kullu, Chavelu Devi (55) and Kritika (17) died when their house at Khadel village in Sheel gram panchayat of Anni tehsil was hit by debris following the landslide around 9 am, Director of state disaster management department Sudesh Mokhta said.

In another incident in the district, 10 shops and three vehicles were washed away following a cloudburst at the Deuthi gram panchayat in Anni tehsil around 7.30 am, he added.

Overcast sky in Delhi, rains likely from Saturday

Cloudy weather and strong surface winds are predicted in the city on Thursday while light to moderate rainfall is likely in the capital for a few days from Saturday, forecasting agencies have said.

The Safdarjung Observatory, Delhi's primary weather station, recorded a minimum temperature of 28 degrees Celsius, a notch above normal for this time of the year.

The maximum temperature is likely to settle around 35 degrees Celsius.

Delhi and other parts of northwest India have not seen much rainfall over the last few days as the monsoon trough continues to be over central parts of the country. (PTI)

Two persons swept away after heavy rains in Indore

Two persons were swept away in swollen drains following heavy rains in Madhya Pradesh's Indore city and efforts were on to trace them, police officials said on Thursday. Chandan Nagar police station in-charge Abhay Nema said local residents informed them that a man, Zakir Khan (24), accidentally fell into a drain in Sirpur area of the city on Wednesday afternoon when he was trying to stop other people from entering the water body. Search was on for him with the help of divers and personnel of the State Disaster Response Force, he said.

In another incident on Wednesday night, a woman, Durga Jaiswal (26), was swept away in an overflowing drain in Banganga area. "The woman lived in a house close to the drain. While throwing garbage from the rooftop of her house, she lost balance and fell into the drain,” Banganga police station in-charge Rajendra Soni said. (PTI)

Sunny morning in parts of Mumbai; IMD predicts moderate rain, strong wind

It was a sunny Thursday morning in parts of Mumbai, after good spells of rain over the last few days. According to civic officials, most parts of the city did not witness rain in the morning. The sun shone brightly in some areas of the metropolis, while other parts witnessed overcast skies. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted moderate rain in the city and suburbs with the possibility of heavy rainfall at isolated places in the next 24 hours. It has also forecast occasional strong winds of 40 to 50 kilometre per hour gusting up to 60 kmph. According to civic officials, there will be a high tide of 4.59 metres in the Arabian Sea at 11.33 am and of 4.12 metres at 11.33 pm. (PTI)

Shops washed away in cloudburst in Kullu

A cloudburst in Himachal Pradesh's Kullu district on Thursday washed away ten shops and three vehicles, the state disaster management department said.

No casualties have been reported in the cloudburst at Deuthi gram panchayat in Anni tehsil at around 7.30 am, the department said.

An old bus stand and panchayat building at Deuthi are also facing the risk of being washed away.(PTI)

Second warning issued as Godavari flood surge continues in AP

The second warning signal has been raised at Sir Arthur Cotton Barrage at Dowaleswaram near Rajamahendravaram as the flood flow in river Godavari rose to 13.19 lakh cusecs (cubic foot of water flow per second) on Thursday morning. Three teams each of the National Disaster Response Force and the SDRF have been positioned in B R Ambedkar Konaseema, Alluri Sitarama Raju and Eluru districts for carrying out rescue and relief operations as several mandals are affected by the flood. State Disaster Management Authority Managing Director B R Ambedkar said Collectors of the respective districts have been put on alert in view of the increase in the flood.(PTI)

No need for concern as water level in major dams coming down, says Kerala govt

The Kerala government on Wednesday said the water level in major dams including Mullaperiyar, Idukki and Idamalayar is coming down and as of now there is no need for any concern. State Water Resources Minister Roshy Augustine said though the water level in Mullaperiyar dam rose to 139 ft at one point, it later came down and the present water level is 138 ft.

Old temple collapses in Nagpur amid heavy rain

Four persons were injured when the major portion of an old Shiv temple collapsed amid heavy rain in Ganjipeth area here on Wednesday, a police official said. The temple, said to be more than a hundred years old, was already in a dilapidated condition, he said. Parts of the stone-and-brick temple crashed on adjacent houses, an official said.

Landslide on NH 53 in Sambalpur disrupts traffic

Traffic movement on the National Highway 53 was affected on Wednesday due to a landslide in Odisha’s Sambalpur district, an official said.

Boulders and debris blocked one part of the four-lane highway at Laxmi Dungri area due to the landslide following incessant rain.
